Uniform electron gas from the Colle-Salvetti functional: Missing long-range correlations

چکیده
Colle and Salvetti @Theor. Chim. Acta 37, 329 ~1975!# approximated the correlation energy of a manyelectron system as a functional of the Hartree-Fock one-particle density matrix. The most fundamental and least approximate version of this functional @their Eq. ~9!# is found to yield only 25% of the true correlation energy of a uniform electron gas, and not 100% as previously believed. While short-range correlations are described surprisingly well by this approach, important long-range correlations are missing. Such correlations are energetically negligible in atoms, but cannot be ignored in more extended systems, including solids as well as molecules.

The self-interaction error and the description of non-dynamic electron correlation in density functional theory
The self-interaction error (SIE) plays a central role in density functional theory (DFT) when carried out with approximate exchange-correlation functionals. Its origin, properties, and consequences for the development of standard DFT to a method that can correctly describe multi-reference electron systems by treating dynamic and non-dynamic electron correlation on an equal footing, is discussed...
متن کاملOrbital currents in the Colle-Salvetti correlation energy functional and the degeneracy problem.
Popular density functionals for the exchange-correlation energy typically fail to reproduce the degeneracy of different ground states of open-shell atoms. As a remedy, functionals which explicitly depend on the current density have been suggested. We present an analysis of this problem by investigating functionals that explicitly depend on the Kohn-Sham orbitals. Going beyond the exact-exchange...

6 Acknowledgments 8 A recent description of an exact map for the equilibrium structure and thermodynamics of a quantum system onto a corresponding classical system is summarized. متن کاملCommunication: Simple and accurate uniform electron gas correlation energy for the full range of densities.
A simple correlation energy functional for the uniform electron gas is derived based on the second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory. It can reproduce the known correlation functional in the high-density limit, while in the mid-density range maintaining a good agreement with the near-exact correlation energy of the uniform electron gas to within 2 × 10(-3) hartree. The correlation energy...
